The Issue

Imagine being a pilot, 30,000 feet in the air, with a hundred and eighty lives behind a locked door. Then imagine the person sitting next to you, the one you trust with those lives, turns on you.

That is what Captain Smit Machchhar faced on 30 September 2026, aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

He was stabbed inside the cockpit by his own co-pilot. The aircraft was in a steep descent. Bleeding and badly hurt, with every reason to think only of himself, he kept fighting. He dragged himself to the cockpit door and opened it, so the people outside could reach him.

Passengers and crew came in and overpowered the attacker. The plane was brought under control and landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Of the 182 people on board, 174 were passengers. All of them went home to someone.

Later, in a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Captain Machchhar described that moment: wounded, struggling toward the cockpit door, and aware the aircraft was going down. He did not freeze. He did not give up. In the worst minutes of his life, he chose to keep fighting, and that choice gave others the chance to save everyone on board.

Why we are asking for this

India's Ashoka Chakra honours "most conspicuous bravery" and acts of self-sacrifice away from the battlefield. Civilians are explicitly eligible. Captain Machchhar's actions deserve to be considered for it, for these reasons:

  1. Israel's 9/11 stopped.
  2. He acted while gravely wounded. Stabbed and fighting for his own life, he still turned his effort toward saving others. He acted when time was running out. The aircraft was in a steep descent, and he found a way to open the cockpit door.
  3. He protected 182 lives. The people on board came from many backgrounds, and each one was someone's family.
  4. His courage made others' courage possible. Passengers and crew could stop the attacker because he opened that door.
  5. The stakes went beyond one aircraft. A disaster on a flight through a tense region would have brought grief and wider consequences. Because he held on, it ended in a safe landing.
  6. India can set an example. Honouring a civilian who protected strangers tells the world that courage in the face of violence is recognised.

What we are asking the Government of India to do

Formally take note of Captain Smit Machchhar's actions on Flight FZ1073 and consider him for the Ashoka Chakra, following all applicable rules and procedures.

This is bigger than one country

Captain Machchhar is Indian, but the people on that plane came from across the world. Their families, in many countries, got their loved ones back because one man refused to let go.

Courage like this does not belong to one flag. Anyone who has ever boarded a plane and trusted the people at the front can understand what he did.

He was fighting for his own life. In doing so, he fought for every life on that aircraft.

Courage like that deserves to be remembered. It deserves to be formally recognised.
