Recognise and protect New Zealand’s family, whānau and āiga carers

Recognise and protect New Zealand’s family, whānau and āiga carers
The issue
A million New Zealanders care for friends and whanau who are frail, unwell, have health conditions or disabilities, or need support when they are dying. Family carers deliver significant economic value – their mahi aroha has an estimated value of $17.6 billion per annum or 5.4% of GDP – and priceless social value.
The Carers Alliance of 56 national not for profits believes carers are burning out and in crisis - and they lack a clear place in government representation.
We believe they deserve meaningful recognition, an equitable and adequately resourced respite system, investment in their physical and mental wellbeing, and financial security. In our view, choosing to care should not be a choice to live in poverty.
We urge New Zealand's House of Representatives to establish a Minister or Commissioner for family carers, and to develop protective legislation, programmes, and services to sustain carers physically, mentally, and financially.
Add your voice to ours - sign the petition to ensure New Zealand's family carers get the recognition and support they deserve.
