The Issue

In the early days of my career as a flight attendant, an experience unfolded that would forever change my perspective on the responsibilities and challenges faced by every cabin crew member. I was on flight #401 from JFK to MIA when, unexpectedly, three men hijacked our aircraft, diverting it to Jose Marti Airport in Havana, Cuba. They threatened us with bombs and promised fire in the bathrooms. Despite these dire threats, I managed to maintain control of the situation, ensuring the safety of my crew and the 250 passengers on board, all while being forced to exit the plane under the watchful eyes of an armed militia. Fortunately, the situation ended without incident, but the gravity of what could have happened remains with me to this day.

This incident is a vivid reminder that the duties of flight attendants extend far beyond customer service. According to federal mandates, we are onboard primarily for safety, security, and emergency preparedness. Our rigorous training prepares us to act swiftly and decisively in the face of danger, making us the first line of defense for passengers in aviation emergencies. Many in our profession have faced similar life-threatening situations and have acted with exceptional courage and professionalism.

Despite this, flight attendants are not officially recognized as First Responders. This designation is crucial as it acknowledges the breadth of our training and responsibilities. It also honors the risks we take and the lives we endeavor to protect each day. Recognizing flight attendants as First Responders would not only be a testament to our contribution to public safety but would also ensure that we receive the necessary resources and support to continue fulfilling our critical role.

Let us look at the broader implications: in 2022 alone, there were over 5,800 reported cases of unruly passenger behavior in the United States, as documented by the Federal Aviation Administration. These instances require quick thinking and a readiness to de-escalate potentially dangerous situations—skills intrinsic to the training of flight attendants. Furthermore, according to the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, incidents related to emergency medical situations and aviation security are on the rise, yet the role of a flight attendant in these scenarios still lacks formal recognition as First Responders.

By reclassifying flight attendants as First Responders, we open the door to more comprehensive training, better resource allocation, and heightened respect for a profession that is integral to the safety and security of millions of passengers worldwide.

I urge you to join me in advocating for our reclassification as First Responders by supporting this petition. Together, we can work towards ensuring that flight attendants receive the acknowledgment, respect, and resources that reflect the true nature of their duties. Sign today to recognize the valor and crucial role of these aviation professionals. Thank you for your support.
