The Issue

I am just one of many homeowners in the Indian River Lagoon watershed facing an overwhelming financial burden due to Florida House Bill 1379, passed in 2023. This bill mandates that all properties must upgrade their septic systems to aerobic units by July 1, 2030. While this might seem like a distant deadline, the reality is that these systems cost between $22,000 and $27,000. The reimbursement, a mere $6,000 from taxed funds, leaves families like mine scrambling to cover a daunting $16,000 to $21,000 shortfall.

As a homeowner, this unexpected financial pressure jeopardizes not only our current living standards but also our plans for the future. The required upgrade places a severe strain on household budgets, pushing families into difficult financial situations. It's discouraging to think that such a mandate could lead to potential debt or the need to make significant sacrifices just to comply with legislation.

While protecting our environment is crucial, the approach taken by this bill lacks consideration and sensitivity to the economic impact on residents. Implementing environmental solutions requires careful planning and adequate support. This law, as it stands, is neither feasible nor equitable for many Florida families living within the watershed.

Instead of imposing such a heavy financial burden, we urge lawmakers to explore alternative solutions. These could include phased implementation plans, increased financial assistance, subsidized loans, or exemptions for low-income households. By collaboratively working with the community, lawmakers can develop a more sustainable solution that balances environmental protection with the economic realities of its citizens.

Today, I ask for your support in urging the Florida Legislature to rescind or revise Bill 1379 to create a more viable and equitable solution for all. Let’s ensure that while we aim to protect our beloved lagoon, we do not compromise the financial well-being of its stewards. Sign this petition today to voice your support for a fairer approach that benefits both our environment and our community.
