Recall Medical Board of California's Dr Richard Thorp for Conflict of Interest

The Issue

The Medical Board of California is supposed to protect consumers from dangerous doctors. There is no provision in the law to protect doctors.

Yet, in a recent disciplinary action, Dr. Richard Thorp, former President of the California Medical Association and current Board member on the Medical Board of California, gave a character witness testimony for a doctor under investigation which included an overdose death of a patient (the case involved 5 different patients), and did not recuse himself. In the end, the doctor was let off easy with a "public reprimand," the lowest form of Medical Board discipline.

You can watch this being called into question by a whistleblower Medical Board member during the hearing at this link: Hearing

Prior to this, another former CMA President and current sitting Medical Board member, Dr. Dev GnanaDev sat on the disciplinary case of a friend and co-worker who had sexually assaulted a 15-year old girl. The Board voted to give him his license back and he's practicing medicine to this day.

We are asking that Governor Gavin Newsom recall Dr. Richard Thorp for these actions and set into motion legislation to stop Medical Board Members from being able to affect disciplinary investigations in any way due to the severe conflict of interest.
