Since 2007 the CPSC has been allowing the use of glass and hazardous modified acrylic fiber socks in mattresses as a fire retardant. When customers unzip the outter covers of those mattresses to wash them they see what they think is a cotton/polyester blend sock encapsulating the mattress. The horrible truth they soon find out is that material is actually very fragile glass and modified acrylic fibers which quickly get in the eyes, nose, throat and lungs of victims. Like needles, it sticks into all fabrics and floats through the air. Everything has to be thrown away and thousands are frequently spent to have professional remediation companies clean the house. Victims experience allergic reactions, dermatitis, burning inflammation and psychological crises. The longer term affects include COPD, bad lung CTs, autoimmune disease and more. People’s pets have gotten cancer and died after exposure. The NIH did a report on hazards associated with fiberglass use in mattresses. Poison Control, The Environmental Working Group and The California Department of Health have all given the issue designations. The CPSC is aware the mattresses are defective, due to the zipper, but has failed to issue a recall.
