The Issue

I remember when I was a kid, there was a bridge that was more than just a structure in our city – it was a guarantee of safety. Every day, children use it to cross a busy road that has always been known for speeding and distracted drivers. For decades, this bridge has protected hundreds of kids, my classmates included. And even now, children still rely on it every day to safely cross a road that remains dangerous.

Unfortunately, its timeworn structure is slated for demolition without any plans for rebuilding. This bridge, in its current state, is beyond repair, and a new construction is the only way to ensure the legacy of safety continues for future generations. Understandably, a new bridge will cost between $6 million and $8 million, but can we truly put a price on our children’s safety?

Research has consistently shown that pedestrian bridges significantly reduce the risk of accidents on busy roads. Data from the Federal Highway Administration highlights the importance of such infrastructure in providing a safer environment for pedestrians, especially children. Implementing flashing school zone lights isn't enough, as we've witnessed countless drivers ignoring these warnings and putting lives at risk.

The reality is, tearing down this bridge without an alternative will leave our community vulnerable. It will force children to fend for themselves amidst speeding cars, potentially leading to tragic accidents that could have been easily prevented. Communities thrive on safety and assurance, and rebuilding this bridge is a non-negotiable step towards preserving that.

I urge you to consider this matter with the utmost urgency. Our community deserves a thoughtful solution that protects young pedestrians and supports families who rely on this safe route every day. Sign this petition to demand the construction of a new pedestrian bridge before it's too late..

The Decision Makers

Rod Roberson
Elkhart City Mayor
Responded
From the Office of the Mayor: The City of Elkhart is taking steps to ensure the continued safety and replacement of the Nappanee Street Pedestrian Bridge. Mayor Roberson has directed the City’s engineering team to identify and implement interim measures that will maintain the bridge’s structural integrity while a full replacement is pursued. These actions will help extend the life of the existing structure during the transition period. “We have always been committed to pursuing a solution that keeps our kids and our entire community safe,” said Mayor Roberson. We reaffirm our dedication to a permanent replacement. Given the impact of SEA 1 and the likelihood of reduced revenue in the future, we will continue to pursue funding opportunities, seek community partnerships, and welcome collaboration with stakeholders. The City of Elkhart will collaborate with Elkhart Community Schools in order to ensure student safety. “School safety is our top priority,” said Dr. Huff, Superintendent of Schools. “We will continue to support the city as they work towards a solution.” Alex Otto Director of Communications
