Rebuild skills development centres in South Africa
The Issue
In South Africa, the barriers to employment are often higher than they need to be. I know this all too well as someone who has faced rejection after rejection due to stringent matriculation requirements and demands for experience that I did not possess when I first entered the job market. Despite holding certifications in Security and basic Information Technology, I was unable to find employment that matched my skills. Instead, I found myself in roles that were manipulative and oppressive, not reflective of my capabilities or aspirations.
This is not just my story—it is the story of countless individuals across South Africa who are eager to work and learn but are shut out from opportunities because they do not meet arbitrary educational or experience prerequisites. High school dropouts and those with alternative certifications are commonly overlooked for employment, not because they lack skills, but because the system is inflexible. The current age limits and prerequisites for jobs in both the public and private sectors further exacerbate the problem, stifling people who are ready and able to contribute positively to society.
We need to rebuild skills development centres across South Africa, focusing on inclusivity and empowerment by eliminating unnecessary matriculation requirements. By doing so, we can provide access to education and job training for those who have been marginalized by the current system, offering them the fair chance they deserve.
Furthermore, we must advocate for the removal of rigid age limits in job applications and enforce experience requirements only where truly applicable. This allows individuals—regardless of their academic backgrounds or the number of years between their last formal education and now—to find meaningful employment where their skills can shine. We must stop measuring potential workers by outdated metrics and instead foster an environment where skills and capabilities are at the forefront.
By dismantling these barriers, we can create a more equitable job market that respects and utilises the diverse capabilities of all citizens. Together, let's urge the South African government, private sectors, and educational bodies to make these changes. This will not only benefit those directly impacted by current practices but also strengthen our economy with a more engaged and skilled workforce.
