Rebate student fees at the University of York due to strike action in 2023.

Rebate student fees at the University of York due to strike action in 2023.

The Issue

The ongoing industrial dispute has most recently led to 5 weeks of strike action. This has cost us significant monetary and academic losses. The quality of education for students has suffered significantly, with little recourse offered by the university authorities. They claim sympathy yet have not used their full abilities to help either students or staff.

The York Student Action Group (YSAG) has been established to represent the interests of exasperated students, and calls the university to listen to our following demands:

1) A fair fee rebate offered summarily to compensate for lost time and a significantly damaged academic experience.

  • A home student affected by the full extent of strike action over the 5 weeks will pay in excess of £1,500 for an education that they will not receive, for international students the cost is over x2 more. Each student's case is different, yet the strikes have been financially costly to the vast majority. Therefore a fair and reasonable rebate is necessary.

2) The University of York to publicly change its mandate to the UCEA.

  • We are concerned about the effects of future strike action, so would like the university to publicly change its mandate to the UCEA to better align with the UCU’s demands.

It is our right to receive the education we have paid for and to have our expectations met. We ask the university to act promptly and fairly to address this issue.

If you support our demands, we urge you to sign this petition.
