Reallocate Crystal City Police funds to community services
The Issue
I live in Crystal City, Texas, a community that has long been burdened with a police department that receives a disproportionate amount of our city’s budget. Growing up here, I have witnessed firsthand how critical areas such as education, healthcare, and community welfare are either underfunded or severely lacking in resources.
Our community desperately needs investment in programs that can make a real difference in the lives of our residents. Our schools are in dire need of updated materials, technology, and infrastructural improvements to provide our children with a competitive education. Too many families are struggling with inadequate healthcare services, requiring community health initiatives that can address both immediate needs and long-term preventive care.
Furthermore, investing in community centers and youth programs can deter crime by offering young people positive outlets and opportunities, reducing the need for heavy-handed policing. Studies have shown that improving social services can directly contribute to better social outcomes, including decreased crime rates (National Institute of Justice, 2018).
Our police department's current budget does not reflect the priorities of a community that wants a future of possibilities for everyone, not just a privileged few. It’s time we join numerous other cities across the nation that have successfully reallocated police funding to foster community-driven solutions that address root causes rather than symptoms.
I’m urging the local government and decision-makers to take a stepped, careful approach to reallocate some of the funds from the Crystal City Police Department to urgently needed areas like education, healthcare, and community development projects. By making these changes, we can build a community that not only feels safer but is stronger and more equitable.
Join me in asking our local officials to listen to the needs of all Crystal City residents. Sign this petition to reallocate police funds towards building a better, more equitable future for our community.
