Pet Ownership Should Be Registered Like Vehicle Ownership

Every year, millions of pets go missing, are sold, abused, or abandoned. Many end up in shelters or on the streets, with no way to trace them back to their rightful owners. This crisis highlights a major gap in how we track and manage pet ownership.

We believe it's time for a change.

Just like vehicle ownership is formally registered and tracked, pet ownership should follow a similar model. Every dog and cat should be microchipped, and ownership records should be maintained in a centralised registry.

Why This Matters:

Accountability: When pets are mistreated, abandoned, or rehomed irresponsibly, it’s critical to trace them back to a registered owner. This helps prevent neglect and abuse.
Responsibility: Transferring a pet to a new home should involve a formal process, including the registration of the new owner.
Enforcement: Failure to update ownership records should result in a significant fine. Just as we take car ownership seriously, we must do the same for the lives of animals in our care.
We Propose:

Mandatory microchipping of all dogs and cats.
A centralised pet ownership registry, accessible by animal control and authorized shelters.
Legal requirement to register ownership transfers within a set timeframe.
Penalties for failure to comply, especially in cases of abandonment or mistreatment.
Legal recognition of ownership transfer agreements between parties.
This system would make it easier to return lost pets to their rightful homes, prevent illegal sales or dumping, and ensure those who abuse or abandon animals can be held fully accountable.
