According to the City of Madison's website on street pavement quality data, out of all the "major" arterial road segments listed (Class #0-4) within the city limits of Madison,  1188 out of 1809 segments (65%) are rated a Pavement Ranking of 6 or lower.  And according to the City of Madison's "Road Rating & Maintenance" web page", a rating of 4-6 or lower indicates that the road is generally due for resurfacing. 

While their website does mention that roads with a Ranking of 5 or more will receive chipsealing as a temporary means of prolonging the road surface for a few more years, chipsealing only prolongs the life of an already bumpy road.   

Based on the data, my discussions with staff at the Madison Dept of Public Works, and our own personal experiences driving on bumpy roads, it is clear that the budget currently allocated towards road resurfacing is not sufficient. 

My goal is to bring this petition to the attention of Melissa Agard and the Madison Common Council, and propose that they determine a solution to this budget problem.  For example, one potential solution could be through introducing a "millage" -- supplemental taxes specifically designed solely for road resurfacing.  For example: Washtenaw County, MI voters approved a millage over 10 years ago, and since than they've had fantastic success, resurfacing over 500 miles of county roads!  (More info on their millage/funding works: https://www.wcroads.org/faq/road-funding )

I encourage you to sign this petition, so that we can tell Dane County Executive Melissa Agard and the Madison City Council that we need to catch up on our road quality!
