For the last eight years, Arizona State University (Tempe) has been a beacon of inclusivity and academic commitment, fueled by the invaluable resource of a 24/5 (24 hour, 5 days a week) library. This safe haven has opened its doors to students and faculty alike, providing them with an environment conducive to learning at any time of day. Yet, this vital institution has been shuttered, putting a strain on our collective ability to access essential educational materials at times most convenient to us. To many of us, it was more than just a library—it was a cornerstone of our academic and personal growth and proof that education is the priority of a university. 

The absence of a 24-hour library is more than just a logistical inconvenience; it fundamentally undermines the supportive, academic environment that we were promised when we chose to attend this institution and fails to accommodate the varied lives and learning patterns of university students and staff. We all understand that learning doesn't just happen during standard business hours—it is an ongoing process that thrives in a setting that caters to diverse needs and lifestyles.

Research indicates that students perform better academically when they have access to resources that align with their varied schedules. According to a study by the National Library Association, college libraries open 24 hours a day report increased student satisfaction, higher retention rates, and improved academic performance. Furthermore, the American Council on Education acknowledges that flexible learning environments are crucial for today’s diverse student population, many of whom balance classes with work or family commitments.

Additionally, a 24-hour library acts as a crucial support structure for international students and those from various time zones who may find it challenging to adapt immediately to local schedules. For them, having access to a round-the-clock study environment bridges not just the time gap, but also an educational one, providing them with equal opportunities to succeed.

Therefore, we call on the Arizona State University’s administration to commit to maintaining a 24-hour library all semester long. This commitment does not merely facilitate better scholarly outcomes; it supports equity, accessibility, and academic excellence across the board. Let's serve not only as a symbol of educational ambition but also as an exemplar of comprehensive academic support.
