🇺🇳🇺🇳 Re-Instate Sachem Model United Nations 🇺🇳🇺🇳

The Issue

Good morning, day, or evening to the honorable people reading this plea. The Sachem North Model United Nations club has been denied to run this school year admist a budget crisis. While the seriousness of the situation is recognized, the Model United Nations is an essential club for the Sachem School District that must run. The Model United Nations program is an internationally recognized program for high schoolers that has helped thousands of students in its time at Sachem develop leadership skills, adapt to nuanced perspectives, and greatly strengthen confidence and public speaking skills in aspiring leaders. These skills have already been deeply rooted into the over 100 members we had at Sachem North last year, and are applicable to various aspects of life, including academics, writing, problem solving logic, and university admissions. Without the club, these skills will fail to be nurtured.

The Sachem North Model United Nations program was especially successful last year, having greatly recovered from Covid and receiving over $300 in donations at just one of our many events. We correctly utilized these funds to ease the cost of conference attendance, which was at an all time high, and the club even ended up winning a national award at the National MUN Conference in NYC. This year, at Sachem North, with our roster of highly determined, qualified, officers, we planned to host a conference, which when done correctly (which we assure it will be), raises a lot of funds for the club and eases budget concerns for our future activities.

Model UN has helped so many develop college level skills as a high schooler in debating, and argumentative and critical thinking, during the years it’s been run in the district. Through this petition, we the people beg for the reconsideration of Model UN as one of the clubs that has had to be cut following budget concerns, as it truly is an essential club for our high schools, and it’s absence will leave a hole in the club registry of our Sachem High Schools. Not just for us current members, but for the advisors, the staff, and the students in many previous years who have created this legacy that we are prepared to carry on.

Thank you to all current Sachem Model UN members, Mr. McGuire, Mrs. Seifert, Dr. A, and Mrs. Gearns for your hard work in ensuring the success of Sachem Model UN during these years that the program has flourished. The club has grown so much in Sachem North and Sachem East and it would be truly, truly detrimental if it were to fail to run this year.  Especially, considering all of the Middle Schoolers that have just been trained and are expected to join and increase our positive momentum. Thank you for hearing us out, on behalf of the Sachem Model UN, please help our cause.
