The Issue

Miami University's Student Activities office recently decided to terminate JS Bragg. Not only did he dedicate 21 years of his life to the University and their students but he went above and beyond to better the student experience.

Any student that attended Mega Fair, Charter Day Ball, the Lecture Series, or was part of a student organization was impacted by JS even if they didn't realize it.

For numerous years JS tirelessly planned Mega Fair. Working to make it better for students organizations to showcase what they do and make it more accessible. He worked with numerous student organizations both to answer questions and as an advisor for many. He helped rebuild the way student organizations operated, both through red brick rewards and transferring from the HUB to Miami Central. He helped with Charter Day Ball and the Lecture Series. In addition to all of this he taught two different classes to foster leaders on Miami's campus. These are just some of his many accomplishments.

For myself and many other students it was impossible to think of the Miami experience and to not have it somehow connected back to JS Bragg.

As someone who first met JS as a student, he quickly became a mentor for me. Later he became a friend. Now I would call him family. During my time at Miami I struggled greatly. Both in terms of my mental health and in terms of food and financial insecurity. On numerous occasions, JS bought me lunch to ensure I was able to have something to eat that day. He'd also offer me a space to exist when the world became too much. Always offering an ear should I need someone to listen. I was also a student aid for one of his classes and JS helped me build my own leadership skills in a classroom setting. Skills that have helped me to this day and lessons that forever changed how I interact with every student I meet.

JS Bragg was the best of Miami University. He shined a bright light on all the good and he led with kindness and professionalism. To terminate someone of JS's caliber is a mistake and ultimately Miami is worse for it.

If you doubt this, I'm sure JS still has the box of thank you cards he has received in his 21 years highlighting his impact. Maybe you even wrote one of them.

I am making this petition for Miami to see how many alumni, current students, current or former employees, and community members feel the impact of this decision and disagree with it. Whether with Student Activities or another department, I urge Miami to reconsider this decision and re-instate JS Bragg as a staff member at Miami University. Current and future Miami students deserve to have JS Bragg on campus.
