Re-evaluate the Bus Gate System in Aberdeen City Centre

Re-evaluate the Bus Gate System in Aberdeen City Centre
The Issue
As residents of Aberdeen, we have seen firsthand how local businesses are struggling due to the bus gate system currently being trialed in our city centre. This system has made it increasingly difficult for us and many others (tourists / visitors) to access the city centre by car, thereby affecting footfall and trade for local businesses. The confusion surrounding how these bus gates work has led to drivers being fined £60 each time they inadvertently drive through them.
The aesthetic appeal of Union Street has also been negatively impacted, making our beloved city look less attractive than before. According to a survey conducted by the Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, 70% of businesses reported a decrease in customer numbers due to reduced accessibility (source: AGCC).
We believe that there is a need for better communication about how these systems work and potentially reconsidering their implementation altogether. Apps such as Google Maps have not been updated, and drivers are still being directed through bus gates. We urge the Aberdeen City Council to reevaluate this system with immediate effect, taking into account its impact on local businesses and residents alike.
