Make your voice heard by giving public comment at the D97 Board meeting on Tues 4/28 at 7pm, at D97 headquarters at 260 Madison Street. Come a few minutes before 7pm to sign your name on the public comment list. Public remarks are limited to three minutes per speaker.
Not sure what to say? Here are some ideas:
- Reference the national moment. Talk about what LAUSD just did and make the case that D97 should be next.
- Share your personal story. What have you observed in your child's experience with screens at school, and why do you care about change?
- Speak to the curriculum. The new ELA curriculum for middle schoolers is too gamified — share your concerns about learning that's been replaced by screens.
- Name the research. Cite the American Academy of Pediatrics, UNESCO, or other sources that link excessive screen time to anxiety, attention issues, and lower academic achievement. Our website has a list of relevant research.
- Talk about what other parents want. Reference our petition (now over 1,100 signatures!) as evidence that this is a community-wide priority, not a fringe concern.
- Ask for transparency. Request that the board share data on how much time students actually spend on screens each day, by grade and school.
You don't need to have all the answers — you just need to show up and speak from the heart. We'll be there with you.
