The Issue

Lars James Hanson is a name familiar to many who have seen the HBO documentary "Solitary" or the expose "The Red Onion State Rebuttal." These films shed light not only on the often harsh conditions of solitary confinement but also on Lars' story — a deep tale of transformation, resilience, and hope.

Over 30 years ago, Lars was convicted of first-degree murder, which resulted in a life sentence in Virginia. Today, many who know him, including myself, believe his actions fall more accurately under second-degree murder or manslaughter. Lars has served over three decades behind bars — a term that has allowed him to reflect deeply on his past actions.

During his imprisonment, Lars has shown profound personal growth. He has become a kind-hearted, rehabilitated individual who continues to show remorse for his past actions. His influence within the prison community is profound; he offers guidance and support to his fellow inmates, emphasizing the path of redemption and change.

I love Lars deeply and stand prepared to take full responsibility for him should he be released. I am not alone in this; there is a community of supporters ready to welcome him back. It is time to re-evaluate his sentence. According to the Sentencing Project, as of recent years, approximately 200,000 people in the U.S. are serving life sentences. But statistics also show that many offenders mature and change, reducing the need for lifelong incarceration.

The key reason behind this petition is not just to bring Lars home, but to advocate for a justice system that exhibits fairness and compassion — one that recognizes transformation and personal growth. It's clear-cut cases like Lars' that highlight why re-sentencing and second chances matter.

With your support, we can appeal to the Virginia Department of Corrections and relevant legal authorities to intervene in Lars' sentence. It's time to bring Lars home, to offer him a chance to actually live that life he has worked to reform over these past 30 years.

Join me in this appeal for justice and humanity. Sign this petition to urge a re-evaluation of Lars Hanson's sentence and provide him a chance for a new beginning.
