Thanks again to all who came out for the Wake County Commissioner meeting, or contacted their commissioners.  You're making a difference!

If you've been following recent developments, you'll know that Wake Stone and RDU have been pushing a "compromise" deal.  They propose to quarry the Odd Fellows tract, and use some of the funds to temporarily lease 150 acres of the 286 East tract for recreational trail use.  But as many of you have noticed, this is a losing deal for the recreational community and a big win for Wake Stone.  It involves permanent destruction of the Odd Fellows tract: minimal buffers and most of it will be an open pit.  And it only provides funding for 10 years of leasing 286 East, leaving Wake County with an unsustainable lease rate on recreational lands.  Instead, we advocate for RDU selling Odd Fellows at fair market value to be preserved for recreational use.

Triangle Business Journal wrote an article yesterday describing Wake Stone's proposal for a new quarry pit.  They put up this poll asking readers if they support the Wake Stone quarry pit "compromise".    While we appreciate TBJ covering this important issue, the poll paints an overly optimistic picture of the compromise, and doesn't clearly articulate the downsides, nor the alternative of preserving the land.  Please take a few minutes right now to respond to the poll.

And if you'd like to dig deeper, here's a writeup we did on why we think a new quarry pit is the wrong choice for the future of the Triangle.
