It has been a long time since we raised money to stop the demolition of the Kingfisher Leisure Centre.
We succeeded.
Then Kingston Council came up with fancy plans they could never have afforded for a rinky-dink new leisure centre on the site. This, of course, enabled them to demolish our beloved Kingfisher.
6 years after the Kingfisher shut its doors, we are still with no pool.
In the meantime, a whole Phase of the Cambridge Road Estate, which will bring an additional 1400 units has been built, as has TOPO, the Unilever development, Surrey County Hall, a new tower block on Crescent Road, the Homebase redevelopment, the Old Gasholders Site, and many more.
All high rise buildings that provide no additional open or green space and often eat up whatever was there before.
Not only do we and all the new residents these developments home have no town centre pool, we all have to share the little green space that exists in the town centre and North Kingston: The Fairfield, Canbury Gardens, Elm Road Rec and Acre Road Rec.
Where else can we all easily go?
Herein lies the problem.
Richmond Park is a beautiful place with its ancient woodlands and trees and grasslands, the Pen Ponds, Beverley Brook, cafes, Pembroke Lodge and Isabella Plantation.
Tens of thousands of new homes are still to be built wothin easy reach of Richmond Park.
And I believe that the effect of so many new people visiting the park from their full footprint developments with often only roof space as outdoor space has not been properly assessed by local authorities approving their development plans.
I hope to challenge the latest plan in the Courts.
Please read my fundraising blurb and share the information as widely ad you can.
