Under current Louisiana law, the Legislature has permitted all in-state schools to increase their tuition and fees as they deem necessary. From 2010-2019, LSU's tuition and fees have increased from $5,765 in 2010 to $11,962 in 2019. They permit school to do this within the state even though they only give financial aid assistance fixed at roughly $7,000 per student from 2010 to 2019 through programs like TOPS and the GO Grant which has various restrictions that prevent students from receiving financial aid that is not student loans. The passing of House Bill 26 would allow more increases in tuition and fees until the 2022-23 academic year. What needs to be done is funding towards financial assistance for underprivileged persons, not letting schools charge more unnecessary fees.
