Joshua Ortiz, 20, of New Port Richey was struck and killed while riding his motorcycle by a 1998 Dodge Ram van driven by a 75 year old man. Joshua along with many others have lost their precious lives due to elderly people not paying close enough attention while driving. In Florida, accidents caused by elderly drivers has become an epidemic and something needs to be done about it. According to the Florida DMV, "For ages 79 and younger a Florida Class E drivers license must be renewed every eight (8) years. Starting at age 80, drivers licenses must be renewed every six (6) years and the driver must go into a DMV office to take a vision test." Starting at 80 that is when drivers are required to take a vision test, then another SIX YEARS after that till they have to take another vision test again. Eye care experts recommend that you have a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years. It is even more crucial as you get older. Eye exams are only the beginning. According to the University of Rochester medical center, "Physical changes in nerve fibers slow the speed of conduction and the parts of the brain involved in motor control lose cells over time." Reflexes and reaction times decrease as you age and can become deadly in a motor vehicle. We need to have people 65 years of age get a yearly or bi yearly exam to make sure they are in good condition to operate a vehicle. By signing this petition, we can try to change the law. We will need as many signatures as possible. Together, we can protect our roadways and our loved ones by changing the law to everyone 65 years of age needs to be evaluated in order to drive and maintain safety.
