The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is a comprehensive human rights treaty that enshrines specific children's rights in international law. These rights define universal principles and norms for the treatment of children worldwide. The CRC ensures many forms of protection for children, including the right to healthcare, freedom of expression, and protection from trafficking and sexual exploitation. The act aims to provide all children with safe environments and protect their rights. 

As it currently stands, one UN member has not ratified this crucial treaty—the United States. The U.S.'s failure to ratify starkly contrasts its historic advocacy for child rights and welfare. In the U.S., 14% of women experienced sexual violence as a child (under 18). According to UNICEF, the CRC has been instrumental in reducing child mortality, increasing school enrollment rates, and protecting children in conflict zones. Yet, children in the United States are denied these life-saving benefits due to the lack of ratification. 

Ratifying the CRC is not merely a symbolic act. It has profound implications for the legislation affecting children and would provide a robust framework for advancing children's rights nationally. We urge our policymakers and fellow citizens alike to prioritize the well-being of all children. Ratifying the Convention on the Rights of the Child is essential in ensuring their inalienable rights. 

What Rights Does it Protect?

There are a total of 54 separate articles in the CRC that each address a specific right. Each right addresses the fact that children deserve to grow up in a loving, happy, and healthy environment that fosters positive growth and development. Some of the most important protections are:

1. No child can be discriminated against (including race, color, sex, language, religion, disability, and many other statuses). All children will be protected regardless of the child or guardians' identity.
2. The child's best interest should always be the priority.
3. States must ensure (to the maximum extent) the survivability and development of children.
4. Children cannot be taken from their parents or guardians against their will (unless for the safety of the child).
5. States must agree upon how to protect the illicit transfer of children abroad.
6. Children have the right to express themselves.
7. States must provide a positive environment for children deprived of their families.
8. Any child seeking refuge is given protection from the state regardless of whether their parents are present.
9. States must recognize disabilities and ensure equal treatment for disabled children. States must also provide free accommodations to improve the child's quality of life.
10. Education is free for primary school-aged children, and secondary and higher education should be made more accessible.

There are still 40 other protections outlined in this law that are vital to ensuring healthy, safe environments for our children to prosper in.
