Keep Margaret Atwood's The Handmaids Tale a part of our AP/IB curriculum.
The Issue
We the students/parents of Mr. Indelicato's AP/IB Language and Composition class agree that keeping Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale a part of next year's curriculum will not only teach students a valuable lesson, but give them an enjoyable reading experience as well. We believe our education has been enhanced after reading this novel. It has given us a deeper understanding of how society can be easily altered, and how important it is to remain politically active. Some may argue that the novel is "graphic" or "not family friendly"; however, when taking a college level class and reading through explicit chapters, one should be able to avoid the details he or she feels uncomfortable with. Mr. Indelicato warned each one of his students about the expressive chapters and gave us permission to omit them. The Handmaid's Tale is great AP/IB, high school material that we believe shouldn't just be taught at Fullerton High School, but district-wide.
