Randy Smith started this petition to Mohawk Trail Regional High School

The Mohawk Trail Regional High School Class of 1978, Shelburne Falls, MA gifted a large painting of a native Indian painted on the gymnasium wall 40 years ago. This was a gift that was left as a tribute and to honor the school, the community, and the history of the area.

Several school officials have decided to remove it without consulting the community, the Class of 1978, nor the tax payers. They have not consulted with a paint company to inquire the cost of this endeavor, nor have the spoken directly to anyone from the Mohawk tribe.

First, we believe that the process in which this decision to remove the artwork was made incorrectly. Instead we feel that the local tax payers, community, and alumni of the school should be included in the decision instead of just a few school officials behind closed doors.

Secondly we believe that a compromise could be made to benefit all by allowing the Classes of 2019 and 1978 to work together to find common ground and use this as an educational moment for everyone to learn the true history of the area.

In order to do that, we feel that either the school committee should vote to (A) retain the artwork as is, (B) work with the community to adjust the artwork to reflect a more accurate scene, or (3) wait until town meetings when the removal can go on the ballot and let the town's people be aware of how their school tax money is being used.

My name is Randy Smith, proud member of the Class of 1978.
