Adopt STAR Voting in Georgia. Tell the legislature to reconsider ranked choice voting.

The Issue

Five members of the Georgia State Senate have proposed SB 527, a bill which would allow municipalities to used ranked choice voting in their local elections. RCV is also known as instant runoff voting (IRV). While RCV is an improvement upon our current system of plurality voting, there are notable flaws such as over voting, skipped rankings, and exhausted ballots. It is not always the best system to elect the candidate which best represents the voting populace, and it fails the criterion of "One person, One vote." STAR Voting addresses this issue.

STAR stands for Score-Then-Automatic-Runoff. The idea was founded by the Equal Vote Coalition in 2014. Like RCV, voters can choose multiple candidates. Though instead of ranking candidates, voters attach scores to each candidate independently of each other. This means that one can give two or more candidates the same score.

STAR Voting is built upon the principles of simplicity, honesty, expression, accuracy, and equality. The Center for Election Science gives STAR a 10/10 for both winner selection and candidate support accuracy. We should always strive for the best, and that includes choosing the best voting method!
