Option of Pass/Fail for Ramapo College for Spring 2020 due to COVID-19

The Issue

Ramapo College as a community has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and are facing many challenges such as transitioning to all remote instruction. The student body appreciates the way Ramapo College has been so transparent with us by supplying the necessary information and resources to handle everything thus far.

Ramapo College is built around the opportunity to have close interaction with the professors and heavily relies on working with classmates for group projects. However, due to the unforeseen circumstances caused by COVID-19, that is impossible during this period.

With that said, it is important that Ramapo College develops a process for all students to have the option to finish their courses Pass/Fail as an emergency procedure. This would be a fair option considering the semester transitioned to online courses half way through spring semester. The College of New Jersey, MIT, and Duke University are among many colleges that have implemented the same option for students to be allowed to switch courses to Pass/Fail.

It is understood that some students may not wish to be evaluated on a Pass/Fail circumstances. This proposal gives each individual the choice of whether to be evaluated by a Letter Grade or an emergency Pass/Fail.

This action will lessen the pressure on the students to complete all online courses as the ability to meet with professors and peers in person is no longer available. This will also give students flexibility and mitigate the anxiety placed on them during this sudden crisis.

Thank You,

Students of Ramapo College of New Jersey
