Even though hope still looms on the horizon with potentially high-quality features like Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed, here in present day, movies like Hitman: Agent 47 are ensuring old stereotypes say set in stone. The new Hitman movie, which is a reboot of a 2007 attempt at the same concept which starred Timothy Olyphant (and no longer does, as he’s replaced by Homeland’s Rupert Friend), is currently getting eviscerated by critics. Out of 23 reviews so far on Rotten Tomatoes, only one is positive, bringing its score to a comically low 4%(at the time of this writing). That may fluctuate as more reviews roll in, but right now, it’s on pace to be one of the worst reviewed video game based movies of all time. And given how awful so many video game movies have been, that’s really saying something.I thought Prince of Persia might have snagged that honor, and yet, a 36%, (which so far is leading the pack, sadly enough). That would be Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, the CG-only feature that managed an impressive (in this context) 44% score. I think it’s cheating to credit a documentary like King of Kong (97%) with being a true “video game movie” the way these others are. The same goes for Wreck-It Ralph (86%), which is certainly video-game inspired, but not an actual adaptation. I wasn’t going to go through and list that many, but once I set that ball rolling, I was genuinely shocked to see just how bad critics have savaged video games over the years, yet how many are still being rated higher than Agent 47 right now. I thought maybe at least one or two of the “okay” ones might have crept past 50% like the first Resident Evil, Tomb Raider or Silent Hill, and yet, it’s a total graveyard out there. I know that many fans will disagree with the “elitist” critics out there on Rotten Tomatoes, and may claim some sort of innate bias against video game movies, but honestly, can you blame them at this point?
