The Issue

Each and everyone loves independence, deserves independence, and enjoys independence, whether it is physical or digital. It is essential that people with disabilities, such as visual impairments, have equal access to technology. Unfortunately, many mobile apps are not designed with accessibility in mind, making it difficult for individuals to utilize them effectively.

I am a person with visual impairment, and like many others, I rely on screen reading software to use mobile devices. However, when a mobile app does not comply with accessibility guidelines, such as the WCAG guidelines, it becomes inaccessible for screen readers. This prevents individuals with disabilities from fully participating in the digital world.

One such app, Rapido, is a company that does not prioritize accessibility. Despite numerous attempts to bring attention to their inaccessibility issues on both the Android and iOS platforms, Rapido has shown no intention of fixing the problem. I have been using Rapido since 2019, and despite my continuous efforts to communicate with them, they have only provided empty assurances that the issue will be resolved soon.

Smartphone users with visual impairments use the ‘talkback’ feature on Android OS to navigate mobile apps. But ‘talkback’ doesn’t read the ‘cancel ride’ button on the Rapido app. Similarly, on iOS, the rating bar for your last Rapido ride is inaccessible; and one can’t book the next ride without rating the previous one.

In my recent email conversations with Rapido starting from June 1st, 2023, it has become evident that they are reluctant to address the issue, disregarding the discriminatory nature of their inaccessible app. Their responses consist of templated replies, demonstrating their lack of genuine concern. Though I have received phone calls from Rapido on a few occasions, these interactions were merely for record-keeping purposes. Furthermore, they repeatedly send me emails about closing the opened ticket, showing their disregard for the seriousness of this matter. Despite my request for a telephonic appointment with their technical team, they have failed to arrange it, even after assurances from a customer care executive.

This petition aims to raise awareness and bring about change. We demand that Rapido takes immediate action to make their mobile app accessible for all users, including those with visual impairments. Accessibility should be a fundamental aspect of any technology, ensuring equal opportunities and independence for everyone.

By signing this petition, you will be sending a strong message to Rapido that accessibility matters and that they must fulfill their responsibility to create an inclusive digital environment. Together, we can advocate for the rights of individuals with disabilities and create a more accessible world.

Sign the petition now and join me in urging Rapido to prioritize accessibility and ensure their mobile app is accessible to all.
