The Issue

Washington state just passed a proposal to raise the smoking and vaping age to 21. It is the ninth state to do so. We need a national law that restricts the age of smoking cigarettes and vaping to 21 now.

Passing a law like this reduces youth smoking rates and lowers death rates from lung cancer and related diseases.

It would reduce the number of patients seeking expensive care for smoking-related illnesses.

It would also reduce the amount of cigarettes and vape products that are in high schools.

About 90% of smokers start the habit before the age of 18, and the figure jumps to approximately 95% by age 21. These are formative years, and it can be during this time that experimental smokers turn into habitual and lifelong users.

More than 3.6 million middle and high school students used e-cigarettes in one month during 2018

After a report came out in 2015 that showed the substantial positive impact raising the buying age for tobacco and vape products would have on public health, nine different states passed statewide laws.

Nicotine from cigarettes is as addictive as heroin. Smoking can affect your hearing, eyesight, and mouth. It can lead to a stressed heart, scarred lungs, cancer, a weakened immune system. The list of possible health consequences is too long to count.

We need to pass a national law to restrict smoking and buying cigarettes or vape products till age 21. Sign and share this petition if you agree that we've seen enough deaths from smoking.
