June is Pride Month, dedicated to celebrating the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning community, and commemorating the Stonewall uprising of 1969. Last year the Pride flag was raised for the first time at the Surfside Town Hall. This year, the flag has not been flown in part because the Mayor indicated that only "one or two people" wanted to fly the flag. (See Miami Herald article on June 15, 2022 “Surfside won’t raise a Pride flag this year. Mayor concerned Satanists may ask next,” by Martin Vassolo.) Please sign this petition to ask the Surfside Mayor and Town Commission to fly the Pride flag again this June, and all years to come. Obviously, LGBTQ+ people should not be in the same category as nazis and satanists. We want the visual expression of support, love, and inclusion that the Pride flag symbolizes to welcome everyone to our Town. Our LGBTQ+ families need to know the Town of Surfside supports equality and protection for all.
