The issue

Personally, I know well how finances establish control and autonomy over life. It's a bitter truth that despite being rich in culture and natural resources, the wealth disparity in Papua New Guinea is alarming. Approximately 40% of our population live beneath the poverty line, which is a reflection of an economic imbalance that desperately needs addressing.

Our nation's nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was $30.73 billion (USD) in 2023, with a GDP per capita of $2,496.51. Yet, the current minimum wage is only K3.50 per hour, equivalent to $1.40 in Australian dollars. This clearly disproportionate division of wealth is wildly incongruent with the prosperity of our nation as a whole.

The government's role should be to serve its people, pushing them towards a prosperous life. We supporters, therefore, implore the government to increase the current minimum wage in Papua New Guinea to more accurately reflect the economic potential and prosperity of our country. As citizens, we deserve the opportunity to live and thrive within our means, not struggle beneath them. Sign this petition to ensure a fairer, stronger future for Papua New Guinea.
