Raise the Minimum Age for Thoroughbred Racing to 4 Years

Raise the Minimum Age for Thoroughbred Racing to 4 Years
The Issue
I bought an ex-racehorse in 2021 who we had to have treated for back and leg issues. This experience drove me to dig deeper into the thoroughbred racing industry and discovered that thoroughbreds are often raced from as young as 2 years old, and put into training even younger. Racehorses are thrust into the high-stakes world of horse racing far too early, risking long-term health complications and stress on their underdeveloped bodies.
It is a scientific fact that horses do not completely physically mature until around 6 years of age. Racing them at 2 years old subjects their not fully developed bones and muscles to intense pressure and strain, leading to a higher risk of musculoskeletal injuries and the possibility of euthanasia due to catastrophic injuries sustained whilst racing. Statistically, younger racehorses are prone to suffer from fractures and dorsal metacarpal disease or shin soreness more frequently than their older counterparts.
Raising the minimum age for thoroughbred racing to at least 4 years will significantly enhance the welfare of these animals, allowing them sufficient time to develop physically and mentally. This petition calls for horses to be trained over a longer period of time to allow their bodies to adjust to the high pressure level of exercise required for racing. This change is not merely a compassionate choice—it is an ethical responsibility. Owners, trainers, and the racing community as a whole must prioritize the well-being of the horses over business interests.
There is enormous potential to improve the sport, making it safer and more sustainable while preserving the integrity and excitement that fans love. I urge the racing authorities worldwide to take immediate action and amend the rules to protect these animals.
Join me in calling for a humane and necessary reform in the thoroughbred racing industry. Please sign this petition to raise the minimum age for racehorses to 4 years old, ensuring a better, healthier future for these animals. Together, we can make a difference and elevate the standards of horse racing.
