Raise the Bar: Demand for a Hard Mode update for Super Mario RPG Remake!
The Issue
The remake of Super Mario RPG needs to have a hard mode added to it that makes the game more challenging as the added mechanics and lack of rebalancing of the game's difficulty around them makes the game far too easy. An update that includes a hard mode would go towards making this excellent remake even better. Don't let this remake of an amazing classic go without the difficulty changes it desperately needs!
Super Mario RPG was originally released in 1996 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was the result of a collaboration between Nintendo and Squaresoft (now Square Enix). The game blended the platforming of Mario with RPG mechanics reminiscent of games like the Final Fantasy series. The result was a fantastic game with a light-hearted setting and a memorable cast of characters.
The original game was for many their first RPG as the genre was not as mainstream when it was originally released as it is today and is remembered by many very fondly for introducing them to the genre. The remake goes a long way to making a classic game even better with upgraded graphics, a new soundtrack, post-game content, and added battle mechanics that spice up the original system. Unfortunately, the mechanics also go towards making an originally easy game even less challenging than it was initially.
Some of the changes that made the game easier are the addition of splash damage, team attacks, buffs gained from chaining timed hits successfully, the ability to swap characters mid battle, and the backup party members automatically taking over when three primary characters are KO'd preventing an instant game over. All of these additions go towards enhancing the gameplay, but without the rebalancing of the game's difficulty to account for them they make the game far too easy. On top of this, the remake includes an even easier mode called 'Breezy Mode'. Since the game has an easy and normal mode, it should also include a more challenging hard mode for those wanting more of a challenge from the game. The post-game content does remedy this to a degree, but players should not have to play through the entire game to experience the only additional challenge.
