Raise the Age to Purchase High-Powered Assault Rifles in Kentucky to 25

Raise the Age to Purchase High-Powered Assault Rifles in Kentucky to 25
The Issue
Teenage killings and mass shootings have become heartbreakingly frequent, many involving individuals under the age of 30 wielding high-powered weapons. Here in Louisville, KY, the legal age to purchase these deadly firearms is currently 18. It stands as a crucial gap in our regulatory system that places these weapons in the hands of those who may not be ready for such responsibility.
Being directly affected by the plague of gun violence where young lives are cut short by teenagers with unrestricted access to high-powered weapons, I felt compelled to act. The statistics are stark: young adults aged 18-21 are four times more likely to commit gun homicides than older age groups. Studies have shown that the human brain's decision-making and impulse control aren't fully matured until the mid-20s, reinforcing the need for stricter age regulations on firearm purchases.
By requiring individuals to be at least 25 years old to purchase high-powered weapons, we can potentially decrease fatal incidents. Raising the minimum age will allow younger individuals more time to mature before making decisions that involve significant risk and responsibility. Other states like California and Illinois have taken similar steps and witnessed reduced gun violence among young people.
Let us commit to doing all we can to protect our loved ones and neighbors while respecting the rights of responsible gun owners. We can set a precedent that prioritizes safety and responsibility. Urge Louisville’s lawmakers to advocate for a policy change concerning high-powered weapons' purchase age. Together, we can make a difference and save countless lives.
Sign this petition to demand that the Louisville government acts now to raise the legal age for purchasing high-powered weapons to 25.
