The Issue

Concertgoers attending electronic music events at the Mission Ballroom should have the freedom to enjoy the music without the constant threat of being hit by projectiles and dealing with the consequences of underage drinking. However, this is often not the case. Those of us who love these events and attend them to enjoy the music are increasingly finding ourselves surrounded by teens who are visibly intoxicated, stumbling through crowded areas, and engaging in dangerous behavior like launching drinks and plastic cups over our heads. It makes what should be a joyful experience stressful and sometimes even frightening.

The problem is compounded by the venue staff and security, who are continually burdened with managing underage drinking issues rather than focusing on creating a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone. They spend their time handling ejections even before the headlining acts make it to the stage. Let's help our security team by enabling them to focus on safety rather than policing minors.

Statistics show that 21% of deaths among U.S. teens aged 18 and under are due to alcohol-related causes. Disturbingly, events like these where alcohol is accessible can exacerbate this risk. Increasing the age minimum to 18 would significantly reduce the likelihood of underage drinking and provide a safer environment for all attendees.

We urge the management of the Mission Ballroom to consider the potential risks and choose to prioritize safety by raising the age minimum to 18+ for electronic music events. This change will not only mitigate the problems associated with underage drinking but also enhance the experience for all concertgoers.

Gerardo GonzalezPetition StarterI regularly attend Denver shows and consider Mission Ballroom world-class. However, recurring safety issues at 16+ EDM events put patrons and staff at risk. AEG must protect attendees and the venue’s reputation by setting an 18+ baseline for dance shows.
