Raise the Age for Fairfield, CT School-Issued Chromebooks from 3rd to 6th Grade

The Issue

As a parent in Fairfield, CT, I am deeply concerned about the early exposure of our children to digital screens. It’s a concern shared by countless parents who are witnessing the emerging pattern of technology addiction among our young ones, which can negatively impact much of our kid’s development, specifically in regard to developing social skills as well as basic skills such as handwriting and spelling.

Our local Fairfield elementary schools currently issue Chromebooks to students beginning in the 3rd grade. This early exposure to digital devices, while seemingly beneficial, could contribute to the issues stated above.

Raising the grade of issuance from 3rd to 6th grade would strike a balance -- children will still benefit from using Chromebooks for educational purposes during their formative school years, while also minimizing the risks associated with early, excessive exposure to screens. Also, this change would align with our friends and neighbors in the Westport School District, who currently don’t start their Chromebook program until 6th grade.

I believe that by raising the threshold for Chromebook issuance, we create a safer, healthier learning environment for our young learners. Please join me in urging the Fairfield Board of Education to reconsider their policy. Sign this petition today and let's safeguard our children's future together.
