Raise the £100,000 Tax Threshold to Reflect Inflation and End the 60% Tax Trap

Raise the £100,000 Tax Threshold to Reflect Inflation and End the 60% Tax Trap
The Issue
Since 2010, UK taxpayers earning over £100,000 have faced a hidden 60% marginal tax rate due to the gradual removal of the Personal Allowance (£1 lost per £2 earned over £100k). However, £100,000 in 2010 is equivalent to £159,000 in 2024 due to inflation, meaning this threshold has not been adjusted in 14 years. As a result, more middle-income professionals—such as senior managers, consultants, and skilled workers—are unfairly caught in this tax trap.
We call on the UK Government and HM Treasury to:
Raise the £100,000 threshold to at least £159,000, in line with inflation.
Review or abolish the personal allowance taper, which effectively creates an unfair 60% tax rate.
Introduce a fairer tax system that ensures middle-income earners are not disproportionately penalised.
This outdated and unfair tax policy was introduced in 2010 under different economic conditions. It is time for reform to ensure a fair and transparent tax system that does not unduly punish hard-working professionals.
