My life changed unpredictably when I became differently-abled. Like me, thousands of people rely on Persons with Disabilities (PWD) benefits to lift them from the brink of poverty. The current rates, however, do not meet our needs. We are calling for an increase in PWD disability rates to $2400 monthly for spending assistance and $1600 for rental assistance.

Despite the rising cost of living, PWD rates have remained stagnant, leaving a significant number of us struggling to meet our basic needs. According to the Council of Canadians with Disabilities, more than half a million Canadians with disabilities live in poverty. This data reveals a grim picture, urgently calling for a reform in the current PWD benefit structure.

By increasing PWD benefits, we will not only enhance the living conditions of individuals with disabilities but will also take a step towards a more inclusive society. A society in which everyone, despite their disadvantages, can lead a life of dignity.

The fight against poverty and the push for financial stability is a human rights issue. And it's personal for thousands of us, myself included. Let our voices be heard and bring a significant change in the lives of Canadians living on PWD benefits.
