The Issue

Growing up in Nebraska, I've seen firsthand the challenges young people face. It deeply concerns me that at 16 or 17, individuals in my community may not have the maturity or experience to navigate complex relationships, especially when they're targeted by older adults. The age of consent being set at 16 exposes our youth to potential exploitation, as many adolescents at this age are still developing critical emotional, social, and psychological skills.

Raising the age of consent to 18 isn't just a legal adjustment; it's a commitment to safeguarding our community's children. Research shows that teenagers' brains are still developing well into their twenties, which affects their decision-making abilities. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the frontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for judgment and decision-making, is not fully mature until the late twenties, which means young people might not fully grasp the consequences of their actions. By raising the age of consent, we would provide a protective barrier, ensuring that our children are legally safeguarded as they continue to grow and mature.

In addition, aligning Nebraska's age of consent with the national standard of 18 promotes uniformity and consistency in legal proceedings and victim protection across states. States like California and Florida have already adopted this standard, recognizing the necessity for a higher age of protection to shield their young from premature and potentially harmful relationships. Our state should follow suit by implementing this change to send a clear message that we value the well-being and safety of our minors above all else.

Lastly, raising the age of consent will empower parents and guardians to have more influence and input in their children's relationships, ensuring they receive guidance from loving and experienced adults rather than being misled or exploited by older individuals. It creates an environment where young people are financially and emotionally supported while they make important life choices.

Let's make a difference and show our commitment to the safety and well-being of Nebraska's youth. Our children deserve the chance to grow up in a safe environment, free from undue pressure or exploitation. I urge you to join me in calling on Nebraska lawmakers to raise the age of consent to 18. Please sign this petition to enact this necessary change and help protect our community's vulnerable youth.
