The Issue

In the heart of America's manufacturing center, thousands of hardworking Michiganders strive daily to make ends meet on a minimum wage that no longer meets the basic cost of living. Currently, Michigan's minimum wage sits at just $10.10 per hour, a rate that falls significantly short of what is needed to support individuals and families in our state.

The cost of living in Michigan has risen by nearly 14% over the last decade, driven by increasing housing, food, and healthcare costs. Yet, wages have not kept pace with this rise, leaving many workers struggling to afford even daily necessities. Studies show that a single adult in Michigan requires at least $13.63 per hour to meet their basic needs, while a single parent with one child needs at least $28.38 per hour to secure a modest yet stable lifestyle. Clearly, the current minimum wage is insufficient to cover these needs, exacerbating poverty and inequality within our communities.

Raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour isn't just a matter of fairness; it's a necessity for the economic health of our state. Higher wages will stimulate local economies, as more families will have the purchasing power to spend on goods and services, which in turn supports small businesses and invigorates Michigan's economy. Economic research indicates that wage increases reduce employee turnover, enhance productivity, and decrease the need for social assistance programs, leading to overall savings for taxpayers.

Many states and cities, such as California and Seattle, have successfully raised their minimum wage to $15 or more, demonstrating that such a move can be implemented positively, benefiting workers and employers alike. It's time for Michigan to join these forward-thinking regions and ensure that our workers receive fair pay for their labor.

Join us in calling upon Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Legislature to raise the state minimum wage to $15 per hour. With your support, we can take a significant step towards economic justice and prosperity for all Michiganders. Please sign this petition to advocate for a livable wage that reflects the dignity and hard work of Michigan's labor force.
