After over 40,000 people signed my petition last week, it made me think how many parents must be going through what I went through. So I wanted to let you know about a few of the free resources I found that really helped me and Jenny. The free packs you get from Diabetes UK about what care your child should expect in school really helped me. They’ve also got lots of little tools that are useful for managing diabetes in school. You can order a free copy from their website. www.diabetes.org.uk/school-resources There’s a version for schools too, which gives them tips on how they can deliver better quality care. Lots of schools might actually be grateful to receive this, as often they don’t get much guidance on how to look after kids with Type 1 diabetes. I should also say if you are having real trouble with your local school, it’s worth getting in touch with Diabetes UK’s Care in School Helpline. Their trained volunteers were really good at offering me some advice when I needed it. You can get them on 0345 123 2399 or online. https://forms.diabetes.org.uk/care-in-school-helpline I’ve also signed up for updates on their Make the grade campaign, which is about making sure kids with Type 1 diabetes get a good opportunity to learn at school. For anyone with kids with Type 1, there’s lots of interesting and really useful stuff they send through, like tools on helping with school exams and field trips.
