Our hearts are shattered. We recently lost our beloved Bella, a sweet and curious cat full of life, in a tragic and unexpected accident with our new sofa bed purchased from DFS. Bella was exploring around the house with her other sisters where we had noticed she hadn’t been seen and she had gone missing. She had managed to get under the sofa bed, trapping her inside and leading to her untimely death. The pain of this loss is unimaginable, but we have decided to channel our grief into action to prevent similar tragedies from happening to others.

Sofa beds and recliners, while convenient for us, can pose hidden dangers to our pets. According to a study by the Humane Society, thousands of pets are injured or killed each year in accidents involving furnishings. The risk is particularly high because animals can easily slip into spaces that close or recline without warning.

Yet, many furniture manufacturers do not take adequate precautions to mitigate these risks. While human safety features are well-considered, our pets' safety is often overlooked during the design process. Companies like DFS have an opportunity to be industry leaders by incorporating pet safety features such as pressure sensors that prevent closing mechanisms from operating if something is detected inside.

We are calling on furniture manufacturers, including DFS, to urgently address these hazards. Implementing safety features such as bar locks, automatic stops, and wider gap guards can drastically reduce the risk of harm to pets. Retailers should also include comprehensive warning labels and instructional pamphlets that inform pet owners about potential dangers.
