We are not addicts, we don't get euphoric, it just helps ease our pain, allowing us to function and not be crippled and miserable as our pain is too debilitating. Imagine having relentless, constant raging toothache all over, feel like you also have flu,  having to cope with that every day with no respite. A waking nightmare.
