The Issue

A patient walked into the hospital with what seemed like a simple fever. When we asked about his medical history, he casually mentioned that he had already taken multiple aspirin tablets over the past few days to manage the fever on his own.

At first, it did not seem alarming.

But within hours, his condition worsened rapidly. Further evaluation revealed severe complications linked to improper medication use. His liver had already begun showing signs of damage, and his condition became increasingly difficult to manage. Doctors suspected complications similar to Reye’s syndrome, a rare but serious condition associated with improper aspirin use during viral illnesses.

Cases like these remind us how dangerous self-medication and misuse of over-the-counter (OTC) drugs can be.

Many people assume common medicines are completely harmless simply because they are easily available. In reality, improper use, excessive dosage, mixing medicines without guidance, or taking drugs unnecessarily can lead to severe health complications.

At the same time, the misuse and overuse of antibiotics continue to fuel antimicrobial resistance (AMR), making infections harder to treat and reducing the effectiveness of life-saving medicines.

According to the World Health Organization, antimicrobial resistance could cause up to 10 million deaths annually by 2050 if urgent action is not taken.

This is no longer just a medical issue — it is a global public health crisis.

We can address this issue by implementing stricter regulations on OTC sales, increasing funding for public awareness campaigns, and integrating comprehensive education on medication misuse and drug resistance in school curricula. Healthcare professionals should have the resources to educate patients about the dangers of misuse and resistance.

Please sign this petition to urge healthcare authorities to implement necessary actions and save countless lives. It’s time we take a stand against antibiotic resistance for a healthier future. Your signature can be a step towards safeguarding global health.
