Raise Awareness About Merrimack River Pollution

The Issue

I’ve always enjoyed my time at the Merrimack River in Groveland, Ma. Its natural beauty offers a serene escape, a place where I can relax and connect with nature. However, it's increasingly difficult to find that peace when I'm confronted with the sight of trash and debris littering its banks and waters. The pollution not only mars the aesthetic allure of this beautiful river, but it also severely affects the fragile ecosystem that it supports.

The Merrimack River is subjected to pollution from Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) and litter which contribute to significant environmental degradation. According to the Merrimack River Watershed Council, each year, millions of gallons of untreated sewage are discharged directly into the river due to CSOs, particularly following heavy rainfalls. This not only results in foul odors and unsightly conditions but also poses considerable health risks to both humans and aquatic life.

Additionally, litter discarded by thoughtless visitors contributes to the deteriorating water quality, harming fish, birds, and other wildlife that depend on the river's ecosystem. It's crucial to remember that this isn't just an environmental issue, but also a public health concern affecting everyone who enjoys or lives near the river.

We need your help to urge local authorities and environmental agencies to take immediate and effective actions. Solutions such as upgrading sewage infrastructure, implementing more rigorous waste management systems, and increasing public awareness about pollution can make a significant difference.

By signing this petition, you're not just advocating for a cleaner Merrimack River, you're supporting a healthier ecosystem and a more enjoyable environment for everyone. Please sign and share this petition to help save our beloved Merrimack River.
