My cousin, a devoted computer technician, ran a successful computer business that thrived on assisting individuals and small businesses with their technological needs. However, his business faced a severe blow when Microsoft announced the deprecation of Windows 10. The mandatory transition to Windows 11 became a nightmare as it led to multiple incidents of file corruption during the upgrade process. Many of his clients experienced data loss, leading to dissatisfaction, distrust, and ultimately, the closure of his shop.
The frustrating transition brought to light a significant yet often overlooked issue: the alarming increase in electronic waste (e-waste). With Windows 10 being phased out, countless perfectly functioning devices are being discarded prematurely, contributing to the growing pile of e-waste that poses a severe threat to our environment. According to the Global E-waste Monitor 2020, approximately 53.6 million metric tons of e-waste were generated globally in 2019, and this number continues to rise. The situation is exacerbated by software updates that render devices obsolete, pushing people to discard rather than upgrade.
We must address the environmental impact of this forced obsolescence. Instead of encouraging users to discard their older devices, tech companies should focus on compatibility solutions that allow them to function optimally with the latest software versions. This approach will not only reduce e-waste but also protect the livelihoods of small business owners like my cousin.
I urge Microsoft and other technology giants to take responsibility and implement sustainable software upgrade practices. Solutions may include offering comprehensive data migration support, enhancing backward compatibility, and providing incentives for recycling and device upgrades.
Act now to mitigate the environmental impact of e-waste, and support small business owners affected by this issue. Sign this petition to call on Microsoft and other major tech companies to adopt e-waste-conscious policies and practices that prioritize both the environment and our communities.
