Close Stores on Thanksgiving Day

The Issue

My husband has been in retail as long as I've known him and longer than that. Although he has worked other jobs, he has enjoyed retail above everything else. When he became manager of RadioShack, we knew he would have longer hours, and he would have many more responsibilities, but I told him it was ok, because we both knew that we would at least have one or two days off a week and our holidays. Unfortunately, this year it is no longer true...

This year, RadioShack had orginally planned to open their door at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day and not close until midnight. They would then be reopening at 5 a.m. on Black Friday. Now thankfully, their plans have changed. They are still opening at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving, but will close down at noon, and reopen at 5 p.m. until midnight. The same hours apply for Black Friday, which means my husband and other employees need to be at his store about 4 a.m. Thankfully, the new hours help split the shifts and not over work their employees, and people still get to spend their Thanksgiving with family, but it can still affect people. I am personally much happier with their decision, but I still don't believe anyone should be forced to work on a holiday except in certain situations, certainly not those in retail. Because of this, I still believe RadioShack and ALL stores should shut their doors on Thanksgiving.

By signing this petition, you will be telling RadioShack that you do not agree with their choice of opening their doors at all on Thanksgiving, and that family values are still more important than consumerism and greed. You will also be sending a message, not only to RadioShack, but to all the other companies that are forcing their stores to be open on Thanksgiving. Because if we do not say something now, forcing stores to be open at all, whether it's all day or part of the day, on Thanksgiving will become the standard, and all people who work in retail will no longer be allowed to spend any part of their holiday with their family. Again, I ask that you take a stand with me and tell them enough is enough! Tell them you will NOT be shopping at their store on Thanksgiving Day and you completely disagree with destroying a holiday that for many is the only chance they have to see certain loved ones.
