Save Luton South's heritage; no more blocks of flats
The Issue
The proposals are to demolish a large, fabulous Victorian house on the London Road, demolish the Linton Hotel on Tennyson Road and replace them with a 4 storey block of flats comprising 62 units. The main issues are:
Parking on Tennyson Road which is already beyond capacity and dangerous, so much so, the council are currently taking steps to address this as are the police. There is no parking on London Road.
Visual intrusion for the immediate neighbours. Loss of many mature trees which provide screening and mop up air pollution. We have lost countless trees to developers of late - even protected ones!
Noise, light and air pollution from the comings and goings of residents of the 62 planned flats. The air here is thick with fumes from aeroplanes, the M1 and the huge increase of traffic in Tennyson Road which is used as a rat run. The only entrance and exit out of the proposed flats is from Tennyson Road.
These proposals represent a gross overdevelopment of the site. An unsympathetic, characterless design which is completely out of keeping with the surrounding family homes in the Luton South Conservation Area designated in 2010.
In this part of town we have already lost unique homes to make way for housing developments which add nothing to the street scene. It is vital to try to take care of what is left of this unique housing stock and heritage. All around us so much history has been lost already.
