The Issue

Roseanne Barr is an invited guest of Temple Beth Abraham of Oakland, California on February 27th, in an event sponsored by “Stand With Us”, an organization that opposes any consequences for Israel as it engages in gross human rights violations. Ironically, one of the oft repeated mantras of Stand With Us is that any discussion of human rights violations by Israel is that it harms “civility” on college campus. Yet they chose to bring one that yearns for total destruction of a University campus to speak for them. In a time of murderous attacks on campuses across the nation, we find this horrifying.

We urge those responsible to reconsider.

We are saddened that Temple Beth Abraham has succumbed to the temptation to support outrageous behavior and really hateful words sure to incite bigotry. There is enough of that from aspiring politicians we see on television attacking the most vulnerable among us; we don’t need it in our community.

"if Israel does not nuke Iran, then nothing makes sense anymore."
-- Roseanne Barr, April 12, 2014

What kind of “civility” is this that seeks to quash advocacy of human rights yet at the same time calls for mass murder?

Let this be known.  This event locally and the continual actions of Israel that oppress our Palestinian neighbors only deepens are resolve to act for peace, to demand justice, to fight Islamophobia and all forms of racism. We will continue to support boycott, divestment and sanctions against the apartheid system of Israel. We will not be silent despite the threats we hear from troubled celebrities and their sponsors. Instead we will work to help heal our broken world and seek peace and reconciliation grounded in justice.
